Escape rooms are all about HAVING FUN! Even if you and your team do not end up escaping, the overall experience of an escape room should be an engaging and immersive experience.
Of course, the goal ultimately is to ESCAPE! Let’s go over 9 escape room tips for a successful escape!
1. Choose a Great Team
The thing that really makes your escape room experience is choosing a great team. However, it isn’t necessarily about picking a “smart” team. Each person has their own talents and abilities to bring to the table. The important thing is to have fun!
Escape rooms are a great experience for people of all ages and most are appropriate for kids (except The Poe Adventure is for players ages 10+). It doesn’t matter who you invite to be a part of an escape room adventure!
The only thing to keep in mind is that each of our escape rooms require a minimum of four players (e.g. you can book four adults, two adults and two kids, etc.)
2. Plan Ahead and Arrive on Time
When you book an escape room, you need to ensure that you arrive at least 15 minutes before you are scheduled to begin playing because EVERY MINUTE COUNTS. It’s a huge bummer when players get less time than scheduled and feel rushed since this takes away from the overall escape room experience.
Arriving on time means that everyone has a chance to sign the waivers, use the restroom, and relax before entering the escape room.
3. Understand the Rules of Escape Room
Everyone is likely excited to get started, however, before playing, make sure that you and everyone on your team understands the rules set at the beginning of the escape room experience.
Follow the steps to ensure that everyone stays safe during the experience.
Secret Chambers Rules of Play:
- Players will have 60 minutes (1 hour) to explore and find all the clues to escape.
- DO NOT use “brute force” to cheat your way through the room at any point during the experience.
- Nothing you will need to reach will be above 6 feet off the ground (anything above that is aesthetic and is not intended for touch/interaction).
- DO NOT move an object if it is plugged into an electrical outlet or has wiring attached to it. Additionally, NONE of the puzzles will require you to plug anything into an electrical outlet.
- If an object moves on its own, DON’T touch it! It is designed to move WITHOUT YOUR ASSISTANCE.
- Under any circumstances DO NOT roughhouse in any of our escape rooms. You will receive one warning. After that, you will receive a GAME OVER.
4. Remember that Escape Rooms are Supposed to be Challenging!
Perhaps this is an obvious escape room tip, but it’s worth mentioning: escape rooms are meant to be challenging!
It helps to stay positive when you’re feeling challenged. It may also help to think of hard puzzles as opportunities rather than obstacles. This makes “connecting the dots” between puzzles and clues way more exciting rather than daunting and you have better chances of escaping the room too!
5. Keep an Eye on the Clock & Know When to Ask for Help!
Each escape room at The Secret Chambers is an hour long. Those 60 minutes go by fast! Keep an eye on the clock and plan your steps accordingly. This will help you know when you need to ask for a hint.
Escape room tip: If you haven’t found anything new in five minutes, you likely need to ask for assistance.
6. Follow One Clue at a Time
The escape rooms at The Secret Chambers were meticulously designed by a talented team to be in a sequential, logical order. You’ll find that usually one clue will lead to another. Try to follow the path of clues and don’t get too distracted by other items in the room. Follow one clue at a time.
7. Communicate with Your Team!
One of the best parts of an escape room experience is COMMUNICATION. If you find something you think is a clue, let your team know! Communication is a critical part of solving the puzzles in an escape room. That’s what makes escape rooms a great recreational activity for team building events.
8. Allow Everyone to Participate
To go along with the point above, consider that some people are natural leaders. That’s great and may even be a good asset to your team. However, there’s nothing worse than having one person lead the group to the point of taking over the entire game.
EVERYONE should work as a team to solve the clues. Not only is this more fun, it also ensures that each person feels like they are contributing and solving the puzzles.
9. Make Use of the Hints!
The Secret Chambers has a game master on standby to help you with clues and hints if your team gets stuck. Some of our escape rooms come with a higher star rating, meaning that they are more difficult.
